The first Suwon Derby since 2016 could be a bit lopsided based on current form. Suwon FC have struggled in the top flight while Suwon Bluewings are soaring.

 

For me, a lot of Suwon FC’s issues stem from their defence. There was far too much space between the lines in their 3-0 loss at FC Seoul. Veterans like Jeong Dong Ho and Yun Young Sun need to address this and get the backline in better shape moving forward.

 

On the note of going forward, Suwon FC did well getting the ball into the final third, but wasted opportunities with shots from distance. With Yang Dong Hyun out injured, I think it’s time for them to start Lars Veldwijk as the focal point and build on short passes and crosses into the box.

 

On the other side of things, Suwon Bluewings’ Kim Min Woo scored a brilliant goal in their 1-0 win over Seongnam FC and will be full of confidence. He’s been great on set pieces, delivering assists into dangerous areas, and creating scoring opportunities for others. He really is doing it all right now.

 

I think a lot of credit should go to manager Park Kun Ha. He surpassed expectations in AFC Champions League and is continuing to do so domestically. He knows the club culture, knows how he wants them to play, and has the belief to say Suwon Bluewings can be champions this year.

 

It’s that kind of confidence that I expect to carry through in this match and will see Suwon Bluewings win the derby.
