This one could be a bit of a mis-match for me with a star-filled Austria team taking on debutants and underdogs North Macedonia in their Group C opener.

 

The bulk of Austria’s side ply their trade in Germany’s Bundesliga, and of them Marcel Sabitzer and David Alaba will be the two that I will look at as leaders of their team.

 

Marcel Sabitzer is coming off another great season with RB Leipzig where he shone in the Champions League and is a real goal threat in midfield.

 

Everyone knows about David Alaba’s qualities after his incredibly successful career at Bayern Munich and his recent move to Real Madrid.

 

He is an extremely versatile player and, unlike his usual position in defence for his club teams, is more attacking for Austria and often played in midfield so he can use his ability to influence the match.   

 

For me, North Macedonia aren’t really blessed with as much individual talent but of course I know they will take a lot of strength from their team unity and pride at reaching this stage for the first time.

 

Goran Pandev is their captain and icon. He’s been with the team for a long time and played some major roles in the past. But I just think the years will have caught up with him at 37, and he’ll have a tough time playing a role in this game and the tournament.
